We are teaching the Common Core State Standards. The district will be providing us with continuing training on the Common Core State Standards. The early release Wednesday’s schedule allows for us to work together by grade level to plan our lessons implementing the Common Core State Standards. Below are two web sites that are good resources for parents to better understand the Common Core State Standards.
Each day, a child will be chosen to take home Super Bee. Super Bee goes home in a special bag with a journal in it or another activity. Follow the instructions in the bag and return it to school the next day.
If your child is absent for any reason, please call James Foster Elementary School attendance line at 661-294-5355. You may use this number 24-hours a day. Please note that an excused absence can only be for illness, doctor or dental visit, funeral for immediate family, exclusion for health reasons or religious holiday. If we do not have verification by a phone call or note, your child will be marked unexcused. According to the California Education Code, we need verification of all absences. Three unexcused absences are considered truancy according to the state of California.
DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP
Morning drop-off ~
Please say good-bye to your child at the gate and let them walk in by themselves. Once they are on the playground, they may not go out the gate. Remember to park on the street if you are walking your student to the yard.
NO STUDENT DROP- OFF FROM YOUR CAR BY THE “K” GATE!
After School Pick-up ~
If you are picking up your child through the valet, please make a sign for the front passenger window with your child’s name and their teacher’s name. YOUR CHILD MUST BE ABLE TO GET IN AND BUCKLE UP BY THEMSELVES IN ORDER TO USE VALET. STUDENTS MUST ENTER THE CAR ON THE CURB SIDE. PARENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO GET OUT OF THEIR VEHICLES TO ASSIST THEIR CHILD.
Walkers will be dismissed at the kindergarten playground gate. When you see your child, please let the teacher in charge know, so that the teacher may release your child to you. YOU MUST PARK ON THE STREET IF YOU ARE PICKING UP YOUR CHILD AS A WALKER.
We enjoy sharing special days in class. However, in support of a healthy life style, we are no longer allowing any birthday snacks. Instead, we encourage students to donate a book to the class library in honor of their birthday. Please put your child’s picture inside the front cover and write donated by ____ and the date. You may want to be a Royal Reader when presenting the book to the class. We can celebrate summer birthdays anytime you like. Please let me know when you want to celebrate a birthday, so I can make sure our calendar is clear.
I encourage children to bring backpacks to class each day. This is my way of making sure that papers get home and are not lost on the sidewalk. A standard size folder should be able to fit inside the backpack. Please check your child’s backpack daily for class work and notices. Rolling backpacks take up a great deal of our crowded classroom space, so we are not allowing them. Please include in your child’s backpack an extra change of underwear, pants, shirt and socks in case they are needed during the day. I realize that children may be going somewhere other than home after school and may need to bring toys or extra clothes to class. These things must stay in the backpacks and not brought out for children to play with in class –No toys at school!
Homework is designed to help your child be successful in school. It needs to be supervised by an adult. Read the KLIPS (parent info letter) and initial on the side column after doing homework each night. It will include activities, reading, Family Times and selected skill items. Choose an activity from the back of the homework folder that your child needs to work on. It is also important that storybook reading be a part of each child’s nightly routine. Record nightly reading on the READ sheet. Family Times will go home on the first day of the week. There are daily activities for your child. Please initial by each Day on the Family Times leaflet when you complete the activity. Day 5 activity is optional. The decodable books will go home on the second day of the week. Review the skill.
NAME WRITING PRACTICE
Please have your child practice writing their name. Remember to use a capital for the first letter and lower case for the rest of the letters.
Book bags will start coming home soon. Please read the story or do the activity and send back the book bag the next school day so others may enjoy it also.
Falcon folders will go home on Tuesdays. Inside you will find correspondence from the office and/or PTA. Other flyers may also be included. Please check folders and return on Wednesday. The Falcon News is posted on the school website and will not be in the Falcon folder.
Each week a child will have the honor of being Super Star. This is a time for your child to bring in some of his/her treasures and for us to get to know each child. You will also have the opportunity to be a Royal Reader (see below). A note will be sent home at least one week prior to your child’s week explaining what your child needs to bring in.
One of the most important goals of Kindergarten is to promote the love of books. An effective way to do this is to show the children that adults also enjoy books. I am going to ask adults from our community, our school, and our classroom families to take time to read to our class sometime during the year. I will take your picture to display on our Royal Reader wall. You may bring one of your favorite childhood books or one your child enjoys now. This becomes a favorite time of the day for everyone.
From time to time, I will send out book orders for you to order books. They are wonderful, age-appropriate selections, at good prices. I will let you know when the orders are due. Please make your check out to Scholastic Reading Club. You may write one check even if you order from more than one flyer.
Sharing is part of our oral language program. Your child will be assigned a day to share. They will share on the same day the entire year. Look in your child’s homework folder for their share day. The sharing assignments will be listed on the “Kindergarten Klips.”
On rainy days please bring children to the MPR instead of the playground before school starts. At the end of the day, students will be walked out as usual.
I look forward to working together as a team to help your child meet their potential. Parent conferences will be the week of September 28th – October 2nd to discuss your child’s strengths and to plan a strategy for your child’s success. I can be reached at school daily between 7:30 AM - 3:00 PM @ 294-5355.
